Roc-A-Fella founder pleads guilty in NY drug case

NEW YORK (AP) – A founder of the Roc-A-Fella record label has pleaded guilty in New York to marijuana distribution charges.

Kareem Burke entered the plea Thursday in federal court in Manhattan. Burke started the hip-hop label with Jay-Z and Damon Dash in the 1990s. The 38-year-old was arrested in October 2010 along with more than 50 other people in raids targeting a wholesale marijuana ring in New York and Florida.

Authorities seized nearly $2 million and more than 360 pounds of marijuana in the probe. The government said a raid on Burke’s residence in North Bergen, N.J., produced the remains of a marijuana growing operation and $15,000 in cash.

Burke faces five to six years in prison at a May 18 sentencing.

In Maryland, according to MSNBC, which updated a story that broke last February, the Department of Corrections asked job applicants to fork over their Facebook names and passwords. After a complaint from the ACLU, the department changed its policy and now asks job applicants to sign in to their accounts during job interviews. The report also found that some colleges are requiring student-athletes to add a coach or other school-affiliated figure as a “friend” in order to monitor their actions online, or hiring a company to track the students’ social networking.

Facebook ‘friend’ offer exposes man’s other wife

SEATTLE (AP) – A corrections officer is facing bigamy charges after authorities said a Washington woman using Facebook discovered that she and a potential “friend” were married to him at the same time.

According to charging documents filed Thursday, Alan L. O’Neill married a woman in 2001, moved out in 2009, changed his name and remarried without divorcing her. The first wife first noticed O’Neill had moved on to another woman when Facebook suggested the friendship connection to wife No. 2 under the “People You May Know” feature.

“Wife No. 1 went to wife No. 2′s page and saw a picture of her and her husband with a wedding cake,” Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist told The Associated Press.

Wife No. 1 then called the defendant’s mother.

Coke, Pepsi make changes to avoid cancer warning

NEW YORK (AP) – Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. are changing the way they make the caramel coloring used in their sodas as a result of a California law that mandates drinks containing a certain level of carcinogens come with a cancer warning label.

The companies said the changes will be expanded nationally to streamline their manufacturing processes. They’ve already been made for drinks sold in California.

Coca-Cola and PepsiCo account for almost 90 percent of the soda market, according to industry tracker Beverage Digest. A representative for Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. said all its caramel coloring now meet the new California standard.

The American Beverage Association, which represents the broader industry, said its member companies will continue to use caramel coloring in certain products but that adjustments were made to meet California’s new standard.
